My Microsoft Surface Pro 3

I recently purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 (the tablet that can replace your laptop) on June 20, 2014.  I can tell you that the ad you see on TV is spot on.  My Surface Pro 3 has now totally replaced not only my laptop, but my desktop machine as well.

This device is more amazing than any machine I’ve owned in the last 30 years, and I’ve owned literally dozens of computers.  The display has a resolution of 2160 x 1440 and is “retina” quality, as you cannot discern individual pixels with the naked eye.  The display is simply stunning.  For Adobe Photoshop work it is excellent.  DisplayMate testing says that it is one of the most color accurate displays they have ever tested. As I do a lot of work with Photoshop, this is very important to me.

I chose to get an i5 processor with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD drive.  This thing is just flat fast.  If you’ve never experienced Windows on an SSD (Solid State Drive) your really missing out.  There is no physical spinning hard drive or stepper motor running.  It’s totally solid state.  Disk access happens literally instantaneously with no sound whatsoever.

I also have 1 Terabyte of storage on Microsoft OneDrive in the cloud.
What’s a Terabyte you ask?
1000 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
1000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte
1000 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte
That’s a lot of storage.

I really like having everything stored on Microsoft OneDrive securely  offsite.  I have Microsoft Office 365 and the default storage for all applications is OneDrive.  There is never the worry of losing all my data and photos if I lose my HD for any reason, whether fire, theft, or anything else you can think of.  It’s really nice to be able to pull up any of my images from anywhere, on any computer, at any time.  I really like Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage.

I bought a sleeve case at the Microsoft Store the day I bought my SP3. When I know I’m just doing a day trip and will be back in the evening, I just use the sleeve as it fits perfectly with only room for the SP3 and my pen. I like the sleeve case a lot. It looks expensive and very professional. Snugg Universal Sleeve Case for 13″ laptops in Black PU Leather. $34.99 at the MS Store.

When I’m gone for a longer period of time I use the Targus A7 Laptop Messenger that has accessory pockets for charger, mouse, etc. BestBuy $44.39

I keep everything clean with microfiber dish cloths that I get from WalMart. Highly recommended. I slightly dampen a corner and wipe off any of those “wear” marks on the keyboard and my keyboard (black) still looks like new. Microfiber immediately absorbs any finger print grease marks on either the SP3 or the keyboard.

Did I mention that I really love this device?
